Event Description : ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. â€" At 2 p.m. Sunday, April 18, the Isle of Wight County Museum will host a lecture on the Civil War in Isle of Wight County. Author Benjamin H. Trask will discuss the 9th and 61st Virginia infantries. Trask is a former U.S. Marine communications officer. He earned an undergraduate degree in education from Virginia Tech. He also holds a masters in history from Virginia Tech and second masters in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is responsible for three volumes in the Virginia Regimental History Series and co-authored a fourth. In 1990, he edited William H. Stewart’s A Pair of Blankets: War-Time History in Letters History in Letters to the Young People of the South and later edited William C. Corsan’s Two Months in the Confederate States. In 2005, he wrote Fearful Ravages: Yellow Fever in New Orleans, 1796-1905. He has worked as a librarian and curator and is currently employed as a school teacher. After the lecture, he will offer signed copies of his books for sale. The event is free, and reservations are not required. Interpreting local history, the museum’s exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a country store and the museum’s most notable artifact - the world’s oldest, edible cured ham. The 1902 pork product exemplifies the patented Smithfield curing process. Admission to the museum is free. The Isle of Wight County Museum is located at 103 Main Street in Smithfield. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The museum is closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
